MEDICA 2019

the technological transfer from research to industry. Five finalists have already been chosen, and they will present their concepts live at Medica 2019. The scope of the topics range from robot-assisted intestinal cancer diagnostics, and robotic support in neurosurgery, to robot-assisted treatment of microfractures in the spine.

Expanding presences

Mindray and Zimmer MedizinSystems are among the exhibitors expanding their presence at Medica 2019. To address the target groups of different disciplines selectively and optimally, medical technology company Mindray will present its range of products at two booths; one in Hall 9, and one in the new Hall 1. The latter focuses on applications for laboratory medicine. Zimmer MedizinSystems, a supplier for diagnostics, therapy and aesthetic medicine, is expanding its stand space. “Our stand was correspondingly well attended,” said Armin Zimmer, CEO international of the Zimmer Group. “Medica has been with us for years and here we are achieving all our goals.” The list of the most renowned returnees among the exhibitors includes Abbott and Euroimmun. Together, with other exhibitors in the area of laboratory technology and diagnostics, they will be demonstrating innovations in the new South entrance and the new Hall 1.

The main focal points at Medica 2019 are:

l Laboratory technology / diagnostics (Halls 1 and 3)

l Physiotherapy / orthopaedic technology (Halls 3 to 5)

l Commodities and consumables (Halls 5 to 7 and 7a)

l Electromedicine / medical technology, information and communication technology, medical furniture and specialist furnishings for hospitals and practices (Halls 9 to 17).

The schedule for the conferences

In addition to the trade fair, the conference programme is one of the main pillars of Medica. The schedule for these has now been set for 2019 and includes DiMiMED, the conference for disaster and military medicine, which will take place in the Congress Center Düsseldorf (CCD Süd)

The number of start-ups at Medica has consistently increased in recent years. Several hundred of these young and digitally driven companies go to the event in a bid to meet an international specialist audience, and to present their ideas and innovations.

on 18 and 19 November. The Medica Medicine + Sports Conference, which will take place on 20 and 21 November, will focus on aspects of prevention and sports medicine treatment concepts.

The 42nd German Hospital Conference, a leading communication platform for decision makers from hospitals, primarily addresses a German-speaking specialist audience (18 to 21 November / CCD Ost) as does the Medica Physio Conference. With its treatment-oriented presentations, it is directed towards the professional scene of physiotherapists, sports medicine specialists and orthopaedists (20 and 21 November 2019 / CCD Süd). Compamed 2019 will, once again complement Medica 2019, on all four days (18 to 21 November) in Halls 8a and 8b. With around 800 exhibitors, Compamed is the leading international market platform for suppliers of the medical technology industry. Last year’s Medica and Compamed counted a total of 120,116 trade visitors from 155 countries.

The cutting edge of technological healthcare

The number of start-ups at Medica has consistently increased in recent years. Several hundred of these young and digitally driven companies go to the event in a bid to meet an international specialist audience, and to present their ideas and innovations. For interested visitors, the Medica Disrupt pitches will provide an opportunity to explore these start-ups and their creative ideas. These sessions will take place within the scope of the Medica Connected Healthcare Forum and the Medica Start-up Park, both in Hall 13.

A pioneering programme

Taking place on the first two days, Medica Disrupt is a series of finals involving 10 start- ups. On Monday, the 11th Innovation World Cup looks at healthcare solutions in the Internet of Things (IoT), while the world’s best health app will be sought out in the 8th Medica App Competition, on Tuesday. From among hundreds of applicants, the finalists will try to win over the international jury by presenting pitches.

A pioneering programme at Medica Disrupt will take place from 3pm on Monday 18 November, where the topic of body augmentation will be examined. Body augmentation is the optimisation of the human body using robotics, 3D printing and intelligent implants. One participant is the start-up Ebenbuild. The CEO, Dr Kei W. Müller, has been performing research for a project that aims to provide patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) with individually tailored mechanical ventilation settings for their ventilators, in order to improve their chances of survival and recovery. Up until now, ventilators could only be adjusted to patients in a limited manner, by inputting body parameters that tend to be imprecise (eg: weight). Ebenbuild wants to change that by using software that uses CT scanning and machine learning to produce a virtual patient-specific model of the lungs. This creates a digital model (a digital twin) and enables automated, personalised, and precise prediction of optimal ventilation for that patient.

A prototype is already available and will be tested over the next three years. The start- up believes that software-based digital twins, such as this, will not only change the development processes for medicines and medical products, but will also lay the groundwork for a new class of diagnostic and monitoring tools. To learn more, a session titled: “How Digital Twins will improve healthcare for their real-world counterparts” will be held in the Medica Health IT Forum (Hall 13) on the following day.

Working to make diagnostics more comfortable

On Wednesday 20 November at 1pm, a Medica Disrupt session explores the topics of diagnostics and health monitoring. One of the participants in this session is Vitascale, which is looking to make spiroergometry a more pleasant experience for patients via a novel
