Clinnova Mobile 2 section couch in light grey

release levers, making it easier for clinicians to adjust the foot or backrest of a couch, to offset gas struts and motors, so patients have an unobstructed view, Seers has designed the couches to be as ergonomic as possible. The design is focused on the needs of both patient and clinician.

One of the main characteristics that makes a big difference to the functionality of the couch is its wheel system, which on most of the current medicare and therapy couches is only retractable. The new modular frame design, however, enables all three-wheel systems – retractable, independently braking castors and large mobile wheel design with central locking – to be available on one frame design:

Simon continued: “There are occasions when a clinical couch is required on a larger wheel system, making the product easier to transport. A primary example of this is an orthopaedic couch – used in a plaster room of a hospital. We’re aware that these types of couches are moved frequently; having them on larger wheels would make this a lot easier. This is just one of the additional variants that Clinnova will make possible.” Another significant change is an increased safe working load, with the deluxe models capable of accommodating up to 285kg (628lbs), meaning an ability to accommodate larger patient size and provide greater patient comfort.

Infection control is another area where the range is said to bring improvements, with the incorporation of new systems such as ‘easy clean upholstery’, a process of construction that hides all visible staples, making the couch easier to maintain and clean for clinicians. The deluxe couches will also feature a

two-way Trendelenburg tilt to ±15°, allowing for a comfortable position to be found for the

patient alongside a suitable profile for treatment. Using intelligent software, they will also feature a CPR button, allowing the couch to be returned to suitable working height to apply compressions for resuscitation.

From strength to strength

Seers medical was formed by Simon and Keith, two former directors of Akron Therapy Products, a specialist in the production of medical treatment and rehabilitation couches. The business was initially based in Rees’ garage, at his home in Ipswich. Combining a wealth of expert knowledge and business relationships, amassed from over 30 years of industry experience, Rees and Chittock were able to grow the business exponentially and counteract the beginner tooling and modest offices that the company initially started with. Four months in, the business moved to its first official premises in Melton, Suffolk; and in 2010, the company relocated to its current headquarters in Debenham. This was a significant increase in production capacity, occupying over five acres and providing over 45,000 square feet for design, manufacture, distribution, sales and support. From then on, the company went from strength to strength. In 2012, Seers was selected by the Olympic Committee to supply medical furniture and equipment to the London 2012 Olympic Games, the first major milestone for the company. The following year, it went on to win the Queen’s Award for Enterprise: International Trade, having sold to over 60 countries around the world. 2014 saw significant product range

expansion, bringing many products still included in the product portfolio – including patient trolleys, innovation couches and ergonomic medical seating. Next came more global opportunities. In 2015, the company achieved accreditation of ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 quality management systems, and two years later it achieved the specific quality management system for medical devices, ISO 13485:2016, a key requirement for many countries around the world, which opened up a whole new window of market opportunities worldwide.

Now in 2019, Seers Medical is a leading UK manufacturer of medical examination couches and physiotherapy tables. The company supplies to more than 85 countries around the world, and continues to innovate and develop new products and mechanisms to assist medical professionals around the world. Throughout 2019 and 2020, the next major product line will be released.

Looking forward

With the ever-changing landscape of the healthcare market and the speed at which technology advances, it is important for companies to keep evolving and to invest in new ideas.

While the company may have taken a look backwards to find its name (Seers Medical is S Rees spelt backwards), it has made its name by looking forward, placing innovation customer needs at the centre of its focus. Ten years in, the company will be marking its decennial anniversary by launching Clinnova on the ABHI UK Pavilion at Medica, HALL 16, stand 16M01-01. CSJ
