The increasing importance of preventative healthcare

The start of this year saw prevention hailed as the way to save 50,000 lives over the next 10 years, as laid out in the NHS’ Long- term plan. This is indicative of a significant shift in focus currently taking place in the UK, from a reactive to a proactive approach to managing the nation’s health. According to figures from the BMJ, British men and women now aged 65 are expected to live to 87.4 years and 89.2 years respectively. As life expectancy climbs, so do the years spent in old age, during which the risk of chronic conditions rises. Preventative healthcare offers the answer to reducing the chances of spending these precious additional years in ill-health. Smoking, obesity, alcohol dependence and type 2 diabetes have been identified by the NHS as key focus areas for its preventative health strategy, but as Health Secretary Matt Hancock highlighted in this vision for prevention last year, it is so much more than that.

Mayo Clinic in partnership with Oxford University Clinic is founded on the principles

An alarming 71% of diagnoses were not prompted by patient complaints and 51% of these diagnoses would not have been identified by traditional screening guidelines. Such figures confirm the value in shifting our focus away from treatment and towards prevention when looking at our health.

A team of world-class medical experts

A core medical team of four specialist doctors lies at the heart of Mayo Clinic in partnership with Oxford University Clinic. The clinic’s physicians reflect the cultural collaboration of the partnership with Dr Robert Orford and Dr Kevin Fleming joining from Mayo Clinic US, and Dr Sihame Benmira and Dr Sandeep Kapur joining from UK-based practices. Unlike many other US healthcare providers operating in the UK, the physicians at the new clinic will be salaried, as they are at Mayo Clinic in the US, as opposed to being paid per performance.

of preventative healthcare, encouraging patients to invest in their health now, to reap the rewards in later life. The clinic’s individualised health plans are founded on the 40 years’ experience of Mayo Clinic US in delivering its executive health programme. In a survey of Mayo Clinic Executive Health and Wellness Plan patients, 53% of these patients had new and clinically important diagnoses discovered during their screening programme.

Sharing his thoughts on the new clinic and its multi-disciplinary team of doctors, Dr Stephen Cassivi, medical director at Mayo Clinic Healthcare in partnership with Oxford University Clinic, said: “People in the UK are living increasingly busy lives with demanding jobs. London is one of the world’s leading cities with a high proportion of potential clients looking to stay in the best health possible - for themselves and their loved ones. “Our exceptional new team of physicians will act as the integral force of the clinic, driving its commitment to excellence and delivering a truly unique service to everyone who walks through its doors. Selected for their passion for preventative medicine and specialised expertise, each of the four clinicians contribute a unique set of experiences to our clinic. I am thrilled to have these four highly specialised doctors at the heart of this exciting new project and look forward to the clinic doors opening later this summer.”
