TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT Shaping futures address multiple barriers at once.

Do you have any future development plans for Health Hub?

Yes! I would love to expand Health Hub to include more local-language support, additional health education tools, and actually build a real life model and test it out. The goal is to create an adaptable model that can reach as many people as possible in need.

What were your biggest learnings about the design and engineering process from entering the competition?

I learned how to balance creativity with evidence-based decisions, use many evaluation tools and design software, and communicate complex ideas clearly through diagrams and sketches. I also learned the importance of iteration, taking feedback seriously, and thinking about both technical feasibility and human impact. This project taught me many things that I would not have learnt in school which I am extremely grateful for.

Do you think the project has changed your perception of healthcare engineering – if so, how so?

Absolutely. I realised that healthcare engineering isn’t just about devices or technology; it’s also about understanding

I realised that healthcare engineering isn’t just about devices or technology; it’s also about understanding people’s needs and creating solutions that genuinely improve lives. Engineering can directly address social inequalities and empower communities, which was incredibly inspiring and I believe we all have a role in using innovation to help

What message would you share with other young people wondering if engineering is for them?

Engineering is about solving real-world problems and making a difference. Don’t ever be afraid to combine creativity and technical design with social impact; your ideas can have a huge effect on people’s lives. It can be challenging, but, at the end,

it’s so incredibly rewarding.

Where do you hope to go from here in your own future studies or professional journey?

I hope to continue combining science, technology, and healthcare in my studies and future career. My goal is to pursue medicine while exploring ways that innovation can improve access to healthcare globally. Projects like Health Hub have shown me how technology can complement medicine, and I hope to continue developing solutions that ensure everyone, regardless of location, has the chance to live a healthy life because that is what everyone deserves.

IHEEM is delighted to be sponsoring an award as part of The Big Bang Competition for a second time in 2026, with entries already open to students, and the judging process due to begin in late spring. Institute representatives will also be attending The Big Bang Fair, day one of which sees the presentation of prizes to winners of The Competition. You can find out more about The Big Bang here: thebigbang.org.uk.
