Working in the technology sector, we are privileged to participate in a fast paced industry where innovation is a constant, irresistible force. Every day our customers bring us new challenges that they need to overcome to stay ahead of their competitors and our suppliers bring us ingenious new solutions in anticipation of tomorrow’s possibilities. That is pretty exciting.

But what really inspires us is seeing the application of technology in positive ways that benefi t us and the world around us. Sensors are being used more and more widely to keep us safe and healthy. Recent years have seen breakthroughs in price, performance, size and power consumption of sensors and this edition of Focus explores the technologies that are available and some of the great ways they are being used to enhance lives.

In the fi rst of our feature articles, Martin Keenan investigates the world of the temperature sensor. One of the most commonly measured of all parameters, temperature sensors have been improving lives since the fi rst thermometers were deployed. Thermometric techniques have continued evolving apace since Galileo’s invention of the thermoscope in the early 17th century and this article looks at the advances in technology and how temperature sensors are being used to diagnose cancers and keep our food supply safe.

Pressure sensors are becoming smaller, cheaper, more accurate, lower power and more prevalent. In our second article, Alessandro Mastellari discusses the ways that the newest pressure sensors are being used to make our transportation safer and our medical treatment more effective.

We may only be beginning to fully understand the impact of the air quality on our health, wellbeing and productivity. In our fi nal article, Tommy Bodker reviews the landscape of air quality sensor technology that is being used to keep our environments free of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), our Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems effi cient and our places of work safe.
