The future of sensor technology with TE Connectivity
For this edition of Focus Magazine with the spotlight on sensors, we met with Dr. Sean Gough, Senior Director of Product Management for TE Connectivity Sensor Solutions, to discuss the trends and opportunities within this rapidly growing market. Sean has more than 20 years’ experience within the sensor industry, and holds a PhD in atomic physics from Queens University Belfast. He joined TE in 2014 after holding key leadership roles at Measurement Specialties and FGP Instrumentation.
Interview: Sean Gough, Senior Director of Product Management at TE Sensor Solutions
Tell us about TE Connectivity and the role it plays in sensors.
TE Connectivity is a $13bn global technology leader in highly engineered connectivity and sensor solutions – solutions that are helping to create a safer, sustainable, productive and connected future. Our products are used for the detection of many different physical properties and to transmit power, data and signals in things as diverse as connected cars, smart buildings, next-generation factories, medical devices and power grids. To ensure customers can solve their toughest design challenges we have more than 7,000 engineers developing reliable connector and sensor solutions.
Our sensors are effi cient – in size, weight and cost – as well as being reliable and made to withstand the harshest environments so that they can be applied across a broad spectrum of applications – from inside a car engine or the human body, to outer space and the bottom of the ocean. On top of that,

they incorporate functionalities for smarter sensing, which means they require less infrastructure than other products.
How has TE become one of the world’s leading sensor suppliers?
We see sensor solutions as being a natural extension of our terminals and connectors business. Our customers see value in TE not only for transmitting power, signal and data, but to go further and sense the physical world. The evolution started in our automotive business as a response to customer needs there. With that experience we then acquired MEAS, AST and Jacquet to accelerate development and provide us with a powerful toolkit of technologies, products and capabilities to service multiple demanding and diverse markets. We continue to invest both organically and inorganically to grow our sensor-solutions business by providing value driven, innovative and market leading solutions to our customers.
