Digitisation to underpin growth in pressure-sensor demand
Industry analyst Research & Markets predicts sales of pressure sensors globally to grow from their 2017 level of $8.3bn to $11.30bn by 2023 – a compound annual growth rate of more than 5 per cent. The growth patterns demonstrate not just the increased use of sensors in new markets but increased penetration in the sectors that helped make the key technologies such as MEMS cost-effective for mass adoption.
The automotive market provides a guide to how widespread pressure sensors can become. The first major application for pressure sensors in vehicles lay inside the engine manifold. The sensors provided vital data to the electronic control unit (ECU) in determining ignition timing. The resulting benefits were much higher fuel efficiency and engine performance.
Pressure sensors then became vital to delivering increased safety. Today, tyres routinely contain absolute pressure sensors that can report when internal air levels drop to unsafe levels – often

caused by a slow, unnoticed puncture. Now, airbags have come to rely on the detection of changes in pressure. The airbags in front of the driver and front passenger typically still use accelerometers to trigger inflation. For side impact airbags, accelerometers are ineffective for detecting impacts. Instead, pressure sensors pick up the sudden change in air pressure as the cavity inside the door begins to collapse

“Highly miniaturised sensors expand the available market for sensors in mechanical systems by offering the possibility of mounting them in places where older-technology devices would impede the flow of gases and compromise the overall design.”
