Concern over bans on single-use plastics

A European Directive on single-use plastics has come under fire from plastics industry organisations concerned about the possibility of plastic product bans.

PlasticsEurope said it

supports the overall aim of reducing marine litter contained within the “Directive of the European Parliament and of the Council on the reduction of the impact of certain plastic products on the environ- ment” presented by the European Commission in May. There has been

particular attention paid to plastic drinking straws. PlasticsEurope said marine litter is a result of a combination of factors. The most important ones to tackle are the lack of implementation of waste- related legislation at national and regional level in Europe, the lack of proper waste management in some parts of the world and inappropriate littering behaviour. It said: “We therefore

urge the European Commis- sion to avoid shortcuts – plastic product bans are not

the solution and will not achieve the structural change needed to build the foundation for a sustainable and resource efficient economy; as alternative products may not be more sustainable.” IK, the German Associa- tion for Plastics Packaging and Films, said bans on individual products over- turns the holistic approach shown by the European Commission in its Plastics Strategy in January. They also do not bring about a greater understanding of the issues. Instead, it urged

the Commission to concen- trate on the consistent implementation of existing waste legislation in all EU member states and on an EU-wide landfill ban for plastic waste. www.plasticseurope.orgwww.kunststoffverpackungen.de
