ADDITIVES | NPE2018 REVIEW

packaging applications which do not require a high melt flow. But there has always been a disconnect because injection moulders want to use recycled PP with a high melt flow rate, said Patel, speaking to Plastics Recycling World at Milliken’s NPE booth. The company expects applications to include housewares such as totes and hampers, lawn and garden products such as outdoor furniture and flowerpots, and industrial crates, battery cases and pails. At its NPE booth, Milliken showed applications modified with DeltaMax, including a paint tray made with 100% recycled PP and other products made with virgin PP. Milliken has also explored the potential for PP modified with DeltaMax to be used in appliance components such as washer drums, refrigerator trays and motor housings, and in automotive bumpers and interior parts. Patel said it has carried out trials with plastics recyclers in Europe and the US. In a US project, used car bumpers were procured with the help of the Plastics Industry Association. Also in the polyolefins field, ExxonMobil

presented its Vistamaxx PE-PP copolymer at the ReFocus Summit. In a recycling context, Vistamaxx can be used to compatibilise PP and PE in a mixed recyclate. Among the Vistamaxx benefits are enhancement to impact performance and modification of melt flow, says ExxonMobil. At the conference, Timothy Dean, a market developer in the Vistamaxx performance polymers group, presented some case studies of Vistamaxx used in recycling. In one of these, Vistamaxx was added at 5% to mixed post-consumer film

stream, containing about 20% PP, was dosed 10% with Vistamaxx, resulting in 250% higher impact strength, said Dean. Vertellus launched two new additives at NPE 2018 with a focus on recycled polyesters, such as PET. ZeMac Link NP is a compatibiliser for virgin polyamide and recycled PET. The company says it provides a cost-effective approach for processors to start incorporating recyclate in engineering plastics applications. These could include office furniture, fasteners, hand tools, outdoor equipment, textile bobbins and automo- tive accessories such as hubcaps. “It opens a path for those processors and compounders in the engineering plastics space to use recycled materi- als,” marketing manager Prasad Taranekar told Plastics Recycling World. He said that recycled PET is attractive because of its availability and cleanness, compared with the recycled PA in the market. ZeMac Link NP can be dosed at low levels of 1-3%. Cost savings are in the range of 5-20%, said Taranekar, depending on the proportions of recycled PET, virgin PA or recycled PA. Glass fibre and mineral reinforcement and impact modifiers may also be used with ZeMac Link NP. Vertellus also introduced ZeMac Extend P, a

chain extender additive for upgrading recycled polyesters, including PET. The additive increases the molecular weight and intrinsic viscosity of recycled and virgin PET. With improved melt viscosity and increased melt strength, ZeMac Extend P reduces sagging of the extrudate, resulting in faster production, the company says. It also counteracts hydrolytic degradation and improves impact strength. Ashok Adur, Commercial Development Director at Vertellus, said ZeMac Extend P is initially being targeted at injection moulding applications, but it is also suitable for film,

sheet, tape and profile extrusion, bottle blow moulding, and strap- ping and foamed sheets. Food contact approval will depend on the application, he said, and at first Vertellus will concentrate on non-food applications. Struktol Company of America highlighted new products at NPE
