producer Hickman’s Family Farms to recycle PET post-consumer bottle bales into egg packaging. Global Plastics recycles approximately 4m bottles a day, which are sorted by colour, ground and washed. The company then pelletises the flakes and extrudes the sheet for final use in thermo- forming. The entire process is performed by Amut Group machines and complies with FDA certification regulations for packaging suitable for direct food contact applications. Using this material, Hickman’s Family Farms has introduced the egg container made entirely from post-con- sumer PET soda and water bottles. It takes about five bottles to make an 18-count egg pack and about three bottles to make one of 12-count egg. A 24-egg carton is in development. Amut Group and Erema have also collaborated
on a Bottle to Packaging process for recycled PET. The post-consumer PET bottle flakes are processed in a new demonstration facility – a combination of Vacurema technology and Amut’s inline sheet plant – in a single process to make food contact grade thermoforming sheet. The demonstration plant at Amut’s headquarters in Novara, Italy, was available for viewing by visitors
to the Plast exhibition in Milan at the end of May. The rPET sheet produced in the plant was then used to make thermoformed trays for the food sector at Amut’s stand at Plast. The demonstration facility in Novara will continue to be available for customer trials after the Plast Milan show. Amut says that the process offers energy
savings, IV preservation, as well as lower logistics and process costs that lead to higher profitability. By combining recycling and production technol- ogy there is no longer any unnecessary processing stage. The melt goes directly from the Vacurema to the Amut plant without the need for pelletising.
