Styrene majors join with recycling partners


Total Polymers has signed an agreement with Canadian technology startup Poly- styvert to work together on the dissolution and purification of household post-con- sumer polystyrene. Polystyvert has developed an innovative method for recycling PS that is based on a dissolution process. The company says this process produces recyclates which can be used in a broader range of market applica- tions than recyclates produced through mechanical recycling methods. Total said: “The combination of Poly-


styvert’s innovative technology and Total’s know-how in industrial-scale dissolution and polymerization technologies should generate high-quality recyclates addressing a broad range of polystyrene market requirements.”

Total Refining & Chemicals, said: “In 2017, Total performed three successful test runs with post-consumer recyclates incorpo- rated in virgin polymer via dissolution and polymerisation.” Ineos Styrolution and Agilyx Corporation have signed a memorandum of under- standing for deploying Agilyx’s de-poly- merisation technology at or near to an Ineos Styrolution facility in North America.
