Packaging industry heads to Essen recycling show


Leading producers and users of packaging materi- als have signed up to attend the Plastics Recycling World Exhibition 2018, which takes place at Messe Essen in Ger- many on 27-28 June. The free-to-attend event will feature a wide range of exhibitors, including leading plastics recyclers, plus a two-day conference programme focusing on the latest recycling technolo- gies, market trends, legisla- tive developments and application opportunities. Major players in the

UK must invest in recycling flexibles


For the UK to increase its plastics recycling rate and hit future targets, there should be increased recycling of flexible packaging, said Axion Polymers in the UK. A total investment of £100m is needed to increase UK flexible plastic recycling capacity, said Richard McKinlay, Axion’s Head of Circular Economy. This investment could come from Extended Producer Responsibil- ity schemes that encourage brands to

design for recycling in exchange for reduced compliance fees. Axion says around 414,000 tonnes


of plastic-based flexible packaging is placed on the UK market each year. Flexible packaging such as plastic bags, confectionery wrappers, frozen food bags and pouches makes up 27% of consumer plastic packaging in the UK, but much of this ends up in landfills or energy recovery.
