DECORATION | TECHNOLOGY In production cell automation, Wittmann According to José Oscar Péres Filho, Regional

Business Development Manager for Latin America at Verstraete IML, peelable IML offers a number of important advantages. “It is perfectly safe for transporting and storing frozen products and consumers can easily remove the label to use the packaging to store other products or to cut out a discount coupon or reward point from the label without ruining the packaging. When combined with double-sided IML, the brand owner can even print product info or inspiring recipes on the back of the IML label.” The companies say that the greatest challenge

in this project was to integrate the spoon into the lid. “Verstraete IML sent us a number of test labels,” says Bruno Dedomenici, Associate Indus- trial Director at Plasticos Regina. “We provided each other with feedback so that together we could arrive at the best functionality, optimal design and ready-made moulds. Nestlé is very pleased with the result. The spoon is extremely easy to remove from inside the lid and the system is both safe and hygienic. In addition, the spoon is of the perfect size, lightweight, sturdy and stays securely in place when filling, transporting and stacking our packages.” Innovia Films has launched RayoForm ICU, a

clear IML film. The company says that it has been developed specifically to maximise brand impact through the use of clear containers. It is also claimed to maximise printing and moulding performance and efficiencies. Print trials have shown ICU can readily exceed industry standards for sheets per hour. The film’s balanced mechanical properties offer potential SKU reduction as sheets can be sheet-fed in multiple directions. According to Innovia Films, RayoForm ICU offers increased productivity for the moulder through faster label handling, enhanced container shape retention and more efficient stacking. RayoForm ICU is currently available in thickness of 58 micron/230 gauge.

Battenfeld has developed the W837 IML robot system with camera control for the produc- tion of lids. The company says that the W837 IML system has a highly dynamic horizontal axis that allows for the fastest insertion and removal movements, and for the highest control accuracy. The new W837 IML systems are geared to high productivity and optimal use of energy, contributing significantly to sustainable production in plastics processing. In a demonstration involving a EcoPower Xpress 400/1000+, the production cell made PP lids in a cycle time of 4.7s, using an 8-cavity-mould from Greiner Packaging in Austria. The W837 IML system inserted the IML foils into the mould, and simulta- neously removed the finished decorated lids. The system allows for a concentrated delivery of the parts onto a synchonised conveyor belt. The finished parts are then guided through the inte- grated camera station in perfect alignment. The camera examines every single lid; checking the positioning of the label on the moulded part, and also the decoration on the label itself. The posi- tively checked parts are then stacked on the output belt. Parts that did not meet the production criteria are further conveyed by the synchronised conveyor belt, and are finally dropped into the reject parts bin. Parts that are needed for the quality inspection routine are ejected through a separate outlet from within the working cell on request. The production cell uses high-performance servo drives. This coordinates the most dynamic movements optimally, resulting in the shortest running-in and cycle times. Using these drives also lowers energy consumption. In addition, the integrated vacuum pump system reduces the entire system’s need for compressed air to a few litres/min. The new system also allows the produc- tion of lids that are of different dimensions. It can be adjusted with a few simple hand movements.
