IRAN | MARKET ANALYSIS
dealing with a designated person or entity, whether a certain trade product or material is restricted, and how and to whom payments will be made. It is important to ensure appropriate due diligence measures are undertaken before engaging in any activity. Iran will certainly remain a challenging place to do business and companies should always seek legal advice. However, the increased presence of foreign investors in the country will expand business further; involvement in trade fairs, opening local company branches and establishing Iranian sales partners will all offer good opportunities. One of the main issues for foreign businesses is the ongoing difficulty with payment processing. Only a few international banks are involved in trade with Iran, and there has been no positive development in payment processing in the past year. This has been in part due to American influence. However, it is also the case that Iranian banks have been isolated from the international financial market for a lengthy period and the appropriate international standards are yet to be restored. Much business is performed via intermediaries such as Dubai.
There also remain significant geopolitical risks, which will continue to make investors cautious, while the low oil price will reduce some of the benefit to be gained from the lifting of sanctions. Overall, however, Iran offers excellent market opportunities for the plastics and polymer industries. Many Iranian processors are modernising their machines and plants and plan construction projects. The lifting of sanctions and the government’s strategy to make Iran more attractive for investment should help transform the economy.
