mild screen printing ink can be used as decorating ink or wash-out protective layer on PC films and PET films. Noriphan XMR can be printed on Noriphan HTR N and vice versa. The company adds that it shows high electrical resistance in capacitive fields and the black colour shades are claimed to be suitable for touch panel applications. In addi- tion, the highly resistant screen printing ink can be used for conventional printing applications. Proell adds that Noriphan XMR shows excellent adhesion on PC films, PC blend films, pre-treated PET films and corona treated PE and PP films. Even on various scratch resistant surfaces or hard coat lacquers and TPU materials, a good ink adhesion can be achieved. Pre-tests are mandatory for these substrates, says the company. For decorating 3D printed parts, Noriphan XMR can also be pro- cessed by pad printing. Matt Lacquer ATM WB 6 is an amended water-
based, UV-stabilised and formable matt lacquer system for overprinting polycarbonate film instrument gauges, such as speedometer panels. Printed films are deep-drawable by vacuum or high pressure forming. The matt lacquer can also be used for matting high gloss films made of PC, pre-treated PET and rigid PVC. The screen printed deep matt lacquer surface has a soft grip and shows good scratch and chemical resistances. NoriPress PP is an adhesion promoter for IMD/ FIM technology, which makes back moulding of second surface screen printed PP films with PP injection moulding material possible. Previously, only back moulding of PP film laminates was possible. For decorating corona pre-treated PP films, Proell says that Noriphan XWR and NoriPET IMD/FIM screen printing inks are the most suitable. The printed film is claimed to show good cohesion in compounds when back moulding with Daplen EE 158
Al from Borealis. Automotive decorative parts and panels as well as motorcycle fairings and tool housings can be produced in durable quality by using the PP IMD/FIM process. Nori Protect XCP is a glossy, solvent-based and
weather resistant two-component screen printing protective lacquer that shows good chemical and mechanical resistances, says Proell. It is suitable for printing on polycarbonate, rigid PVC, polystyrene, ABS and SAN, pre-treated PET films and corona- treated polyolefins (PE and PP), as well as for metal and aluminium. Decorated surfaces can be over- printed and protected with Nori Protect XCP. The ink layer is formable on suitable substrates. The lacquer is free of aromates, cyclohexanone and phthalates.
In-mould labelling A well-established decorating technology for injection moulded packaging is in-mould labelling (IML). Customer adoption has become more widespread as IML’s benefits are better appreciated. Verstraete IML has collaborated with packaging specialist Plasticos Regina and ice cream producer Froneri to develop a peelable IML lid, including spoon, for a series of 140ml mono packs for Nestlé Brasil. Froneri wanted a lid with an easy-to-remove spoon so that consumers can open the ice cream, remove the spoon from the lid and eat the ice cream directly. In addition, the spoon remains intact when filling, stacking and transporting the ice-cream packages. Verstraete adds that a further advantage is that the IML spoon-in-lid packaging eliminates two steps in the regular production process. The label does not need to be adhered afterwards because it is integrated into the lid and the spoon is also an integral part of the lid. The company says that the high IML print quality increases the appeal of the product, which in turn enhances the brand image among consumers. Froneri has been using the peelable IML lid for its on-the-go ice cream in Brazil since December 2016. “We have been aware of the advantages of IML for some time since we use it for other packag- ing solutions,” says Henrique Bechara, packaging development Nestlé Brasil. “IML entices con- sumers with a premium look and feel. It is also technically possible to integrate a spoon into an IML lid, creating a significant competitive advantage. Consumers can eat their ice

cream whenever they want since they always have a spoon available. This user-friendly spoon-in-the-lid design gives us a real edge on the competition. Besides, individual spoons would unnecessarily complicate the logistics distribution of our ice cream.”
