Single-serve capsules in focus


More than 120 people have already signed up to AMI’s Single-Serve Capsules conference, underlining the huge opportunities in this fast growing thin wall packaging sector. This article previews this brand new event

Over the past five years, the single-serve beverage capsules market has grown from a niche to an important sub-sector of the ambient thin wall packaging segment. AMI Consulting estimates some 48bn single-serve capsules were manufactured last year – more than 35bn in plastic. And while coffee continues to dominate this sector, new applications are also developing for other beverages such as tea and hot chocolate. Meanwhile, several brand owners are experimenting with cold beverage capsules. Since 2012, when the key Nespresso and Keurig design patents expired, the single-serve capsule market has been undergoing disruptive change and new opportunities have been created for end-users and converters to tap into the market segment through compatible products. Set against this background, AMI has launched a new conference that will bring together representa- tives from across the supply and value chain to discuss trends, challenges and opportunities in this sector. More than 120 industry experts have already booked their places at Single-Serve Capsules 2017, which takes place in Berlin in Germany on 4-5 October 2017. More are expected to join to take advantage of its high level presentations, focused mini-exhibition and high level networking opportunities. This article takes a quick look at what the event holds in store.

with a market overview of single-serve capsules based on research she conducted for her most recent multi-client report in this sector. She will be followed by Nick Mabey, Head of Sourcing and Quality at Volcano Coffee Work in the UK, who will provide an insight into the emergence of super- premium speciality coffee capsules. The conference will then move on to look at


innovation in capsule design. Laurent Lombart, Head of Strategic Business Development for Capsul’In Pro in Luxembourg, will explain how innovation can be used within a product differen- tiation strategy. Technical and decorative differen- tiation by laser marking of capsules will be dis- cussed by Diego A. Karpeles, Product Manager at Gabriel-Chemie Group in Austria. And the session will be concluded with a joint presentation by Georg Buchinger, Head of Product Management (BU Alufoil Containers & Lids) at Constantia Flexibles International and Dr Paolo Battiston, Product Manager at Constantia Teich (both based in Austria) who will detail the current range and material trends for single-serve capsule production. Production efficiency through optimised turnkey manufacturing solutions will be the focus of the next session. Thomas Huber, Director Sales Packaging Industry from Kiefel in Germany, will look at turnkey thermoforming solutions for single-serve capsules from material to final product.Dave Morton, Vice President, Multi-Layer Solutions at Husky Injection Molding Systems in Canada, will discuss multi-layer (co-injection) moulding technology and the perfor- mance benefits it can bring to capsules.
