BASF starts 3D printing operation in Europe

BASF has established a new group company in the field of 3D printing and has separately made an acquisition in this increasingly important sector. BASF 3D Printing Solutions will be part of BASF New Business, and will be headed by Volker Hammes. The business is based at the InnovationLab site in Heidelberg, where it is taking over the 3D printing application technology centre of the Deutsche Nanoschicht subsidiary and employs about 30 people. It is focused on “materials, system solutions, compo-

nents and services” in 3D printing, working with researchers and application engineers from BASF and external partners. “The field of 3D printing for industrial applications is highly dynamic and still emerging,” said Hammes. “This means there is a need for agile, startup-like

structures with interdiscipli- nary teams and quick decision-making processes. Combining the customer-focused 3D printing activities in one location at a dedicated business is an

important success factor.” BASF New Business has also acquired the filament producer Innofil3D. Terms were not disclosed. Inno- fil3D will continue its current business activities, produc- ing plastic granulate and filament for 3D printing, and will also become a develop- ment and production platform for BASF. www.basf-new-business.com

Gabriel-Chemie expands in Russia

Austria’s Gabriel-Chemie Group has signed an investment agreement for the construction and operation of a masterbatch plant on a 27,000m2

site in

the Vorino Industrial Park in Kaluga near Moscow. This was needed because

of continued regional growth in demand for masterbatch and particularly

high quality colorants in Russia, Azerbaijan, Kazakh- stan and Belarus, according to Gabriel-Chemie. CFO Andreas Berger said: “We have noticed an increasing interest in functional additives such as flame retardants, infrared absorb- ers and laser additives.” The facility will be built in four stages. The completion

of the first section and relocation from an existing site at Dorokhovo, near Moscow, are due to be finished by the end of 2018 at a cost of about 260m roubles (€3.7m). Initial capacity will be 2,000 tonnes/year, rising to 20,000 when all construction is complete. www.gabriel-chemie.com

Sanner invests at

Bensheim Sanner, a maker of primary plastic packaging and medical devices, has completed the expansion of its production facility in Bensheim, Germany, with the installation of 14 new injection moulding machines at a cost of €3m. This involved replacing the entire machine park in the ‘Future Project Production Area South’ facility. The company said that the new machines ensure faster processes and can be further automated at any time, better equip- ping it for the challenges of Industry 4.0 and further optimisation projects. Sanner plans to expand its portfolio in capsules and desiccant packaging in the coming years. The investment has also enabled the com- pany to reduce energy consumption via a renewed media supply for cooling water and compressed air, im- proved raw material supply and the installa- tion of new cranes. www.sanner-group.com
