sulfide (PPS) engineering thermoplastic. The semi-crystalline material has a unique combination of properties which include thermal and dimen- sional stability to high temperatures and chemical resistance. The high-purity linear PPS material provides high toughness and excellent impact strength while also exhibiting low ionic impurities. Its excellent electrical insulation properties make the material suitable for electrical components. The material significantly improves thermal and electric insulation properties during thermal runaway without the use of inorganic insulative sheet structures, says Polyplastics. Durafide PPS 6150T73 provides optimal properties for compo- nents such as module covers and busbars, where it maintains the insulation properties of those compo- nents even after being left in environments of 1,000° C for 30 minutes. The company says the material’s colour is close to white and it can be tinted. Solvay has developed a new high-heat and


flame-retardant grade within its Xydar portfolio of liquid crystal polymers (LCP), designed particularly for battery module plates of EV models operating with higher voltage systems. Its new Xydar LCP G-330-HH formulation is a glass-filled LCP for injection moulding capable of retaining its electri- cal insulation upon exposure to 400° C for 30 minutes, according to Brian Baleno, Head of Marketing, Transportation at Solvay Materials. “As automakers are moving from 400V to 800V


on next-generation electric vehicles, new regula- tions in Europe, China, the United States and other countries are increasing the demand on battery components to withstand temperatures from 300 to 1,000° C for an extended window of up to 15 minutes,” says Baleno. The new LCP grade is designed to increase passenger safety in the event of battery thermal runaway. “Appropriate materials are expected to retain a level of electrical insulation protection that


will provide sufficient time for passengers to exit the vehicle in a thermal runaway event,” Baleno says. The new Xydar LCP G-330 grade combines this high safety potential with exceptional process- ability, according to Baleno. The material also offers exceptional flowability and helps battery designers achieve thinner parts than possible compared with incumbent battery module insulation materials such as PCs or aerogels, Solvay says. The material has been successfully evaluated with plates moulded in typical dimensions of 100 x 150 x 0.5 mm. The overall Xydar LCP product line is an inher- ently flame-retardant polymer, which is free of halo- gen or bromine additives. It is suited to many electrical and electronic as well as coating applica- tions. It is also suited for use in automotive lighting components, sensors, solenoids, and connectors. Advanced examples in e-mobility applications include thin-wall slot liners used in the rotor design of an electric drive traction motor, says Solvay.
