IMDA announces 2023 award winners

An IML body cream jar produced for South African brand owner Canway has been recognised by the US In-Mold Decorating Association (IMDA) in its annual awards where it was named winner in the Best Use of IML category. Manufacturing partners were Ren-Flex Packaging South Africa and Teqal. The judges said: “In this applica-

tion, the label film is laminated with printed foil and varnished. No static was required in the mould. The label is bent around a radiused base and upper edge, giving a borderless look. Since the print is applied on top of the foil, there’s flexibility in providing the option of full or partial coverage. And the product is hot filled. The textured label finish – sort of an orange peel effect – adds to the premium look and feel.”

categories were electronics applica- tions: the front panel of Haier’s S3/P3 instant water heater (moulder: IMR Technology); and the alcove of an Elkay water bottle filler (Polyfab). IMDA said the awards focus has been changing. It said: “Three years ago, the submissions leaned heavily

backing of metallic and polymer conductive pastes. It says: “Carbon-based pigments, so called carbon blacks, normally used for black colour shades, are electrically conductive and can interfere with the functional structures. Noriphan HTR N 990/011 NC meets the increased requirements regarding thermal resistance and the demanding hydrolysis test in the automotive industry.” Other new inks in the range are Noriphan HTR N 959 and HTR N 945/546. The IR transparent HTR N 959 is a carbon black-free, non-conductive black colour shade available for functional touch panel applications. It has a black appearance in incidental light but under transmitted light the colour shade appears transparent and is ideally suited for IR and lidar transmitting areas in display and touch panel applications. HTR N 945/546 is an adjusted UV stabilised white colour shade, which has been developed for the front modules of electric vehi- cles. Pröll says this development means a “nearly discoloration-free colour shade is now available for the second surface application in front modules”. Among the other new products Pröll is showing

at Fakuma is Norilux DC, a formable, abrasion and chemically-resistant dual cure screen printing lacquer. This can be used as protective lacquer or hard coat on PC, PMMA, ABS and PP films and is “ideally suited for first surface coating/protection of products manufactured in IMD/FIM technology”,

into food packaging applications. In 2022, durable goods made up the majority of the entries. This year, the IMDA competition saw a mix of each, with an emphasis on integrated functionalities such as backlighting and QR codes – and also received its first in-mould labeled moulded fibre application.”

the company says. In addition to a high glossy Norilux DC lacquer, various satin gloss, textured and matt grades as well as pigmented and UV- stabilised versions are available. Tactile surface structures, such as brush effects and 3D patterns, can be printed with the highly resistant lacquer. The lacquer can be used for surface protection in automotive interior applica- tions, for example centre stacks, touch panels and decorative trims. “Even mobile phone covers and sanitary panels are overprinted with the highly resistant lacquer,” says the company. Second surface decoration is printed with the IMD/FIM ink system Noriphan HTR N.
