SURFACES AND DECORATION | INNOVATION

The automation system features a modular design for flexibility and versatility and can be enhanced with a case packaging system. Muller says the system consumes less energy than standard systems thanks to a unique energy recovery system. A dynamic entry feature uses artificial intelligence programming for self-optimi- sation of the robot and the total cycle time. The technology has an advanced vision system dedi- cated to IML applications. Thomas Federer, Muller Group CEO, says: “This

IML innovation represents the latest in modular and high-output solutions which meet the needs of today’s brand owners and processors who seek outstanding appearance, high production flexibility and productivity, and enhanced user interaction and Industry 4.0 data exchange capabilities.” Muller says its mould design minimises mainte- nance and increases mould life. It provides quick changeout capability for product changeovers. The system is also compatible with the Holy Grail 2.0 system based on digital watermarks to improve sorting of post-consumer packaging during recycling. Muller Technology is headquartered in Conthey,

Switzerland, and has two operations in the US, located in Fort Collins, Colorado, and Independ- ence, Missouri. The new IML automation systems are built at its Conthey plant and also at its Fort Collins facility. SABIC is highlighting one of the sustainability options for the IML sector in a project with films producer Taghleef and partners in the Greek packaging market. The label material for the IML containers is a biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) film produced by Taghleef, made using a SABIC renewable material certified by ISCC Plus which is tailored to the BOPP process. SABIC’s certified Trucircle polymers use a mass balance approach to indicate bio-based or recycled feedstock is partly used in their production. Taghleef produces transparent, white and metal- lised PP label films, which can all be produced using polymers with bio-based feedstock. Monica Battistella, Sustainability Manager at

Taghleef, says: “Our BOPP film range for in-mould- labelling gives brand owners a wide choice of premium packaging finishes to enhance brand differentiation and shelf visibility with a low environmental impact. In combination with the
