through safe and reliable medical equipment,” said Törnblom. “The material must be lipid-resistant and crack-free to oncology drugs, so we needed a copolyester and innovation partner we could trust.” Eastman performed simulation testing for
material degradation and mould filling with Tritan and worked with Cyto 365 to identify a mould- drying process. RondelO became commercial in 2023. The design includes a visual and haptic ‘click’ position for each drug for easy identification. It is available in two-, four- and six-port options. “RondelO can be the physical barrier we intended for infusion therapy, and Tritan has helped us make it a trusted device for medical professionals,” said Törnblom. Eastman has also helped Ostium to integrate sustainable packaging for its medical devices. Ostium, a medical device start-up that special-
ises in orthopaedic surgical instrumentation, will use Eastar 6763 Renew copolyester to package its its Cillar acetabular and femoral kits for total hip replacements. Eastar 6763 Renew uses Eastman’s chemical
recycling technologies and is indistinguishable from Eastar 6763 copolyester. Using Eastar Renew allows Ostium to certify that plastic waste is being diverted from landfills to produce new packaging. “Integrating Eastar 6763 Renew aligns perfectly with our mission to minimise the environmental impact of healthcare procedures,” said Vincent Retailleau, general manager of Ostium.
Getting a grip Kraiburg says that its Thermolast H thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) can be used to make grips on surgical staplers – a vital healthcare product. The HC/AP series of Thermolast H has good haptics and a soft-touch surface, giving users an anti-slip grip. Its good compression set properties enhance its appeal by ensuring durability and dependable performance, meeting the demands of medical applications. The HC/AD1/AP series offers an alternative for
surgical stapler applications, featuring good mechanical properties and a soft-touch surface that enhances user comfort. This polar adhesion series demonstrates strong compatibility with polar thermoplastics through injection moulding, making it a good choice for handle and grip applications. In addition, the overmoulding process raises versatil- ity, so the TPE series can take on different textures and shapes in alignment with the device’s design. Beyond these two series, there are other

Added protection Ampacet says that its ProVital+ GermsClean is an additive that protects plastic components in healthcare facilities against the proliferation of micro-organisms by blocking their growth. Most nosocomial infections are caused by the
presence of bacteria on surfaces. The additive has been evaluated for biocompat- ibility and provides full consistency of formulation with a no-change policy for raw materials, with manufacturing under consistent process parameters. It offers high performance and protection from a wide spectrum of pathogens with a lower addition rate than traditional competitive solutions. At the same time, a low silver content limits discoloration. In addition, the company’s ProVital+ Gamma-
Protect is a medical-grade additive that preserves the mechanical and optical properties of polypro- pylene-based medical and pharmaceutical articles during gamma and e-beam sterilisation. These techniques are used to eliminate micro-
organisms such as bacteria, viruses and spores from medical equipment and packaging. However, both are known to alter the optical and mechanical properties of the polymers, such as elongation, tensile and impact strength. Gamma-Protect helps preserve mechanical and optical properties and prevent polymer degrada- tion. It has also been pre-evaluated for biocompat- ibility according to ISO 10993 part 5, 10 and 23 (cytotoxicity, sensitisation and irritation).
