Orange alert Avient has launched a new range of OnColor nylon colorants to improve the heat and long-term colour stability of cautionary, orange-coloured polymers for high-voltage electric vehicle (EV) connectors. They were highlighted at

this year’s Chinaplas show, held in Shanghai in April. In thermal ageing tests at up to 130°C for 1,000 hours, products made with OnColor durable orange nylon colorants achieved improved results compared to similar products against long-term fading resistance, said Avient. In addition, samples exposed to high humidity for seven days at 85°C and 85% relative

humidity showed limited loss of colour, suggesting that the colorants can also be used in high-humidity environments. “Cautionary orange is used as a warning of potential safety hazards and is a preferred choice for automotive manufacturers to distinguish high-voltage power connectors and cables from other parts in electric vehicles,” said Bob

Lee, general manager for colour and additives for greater China at Avient. The colorants are avail- able in several RAL, Pantone, and JPMA orange shades for applications including injection moulding.

Back to black Grafe says it has developed an efficient alternative for the most common automo- tive black shades, with its new Base Black masterbatch for polypropylene (PP). In addition to its perma- nent availability – with sample quantities shipped the same day for production tests – it offers a better price level compared to an OEM direct colour, the company claims. In addition, the masterbatch can also be flexibly adjusted.

“Our Base Black master-

batch already achieves excellent colour values at standard parameters in the production process, which are within the OEM tolerance and only deviate slightly from the direct colours,” said Lars Schulze, Head of colour development and material sciences at Grafe. “The development is used for rapid initial sampling and can be brought to the target through process optimisation.” The company points out

that Base Black can already be adjusted in the produc- tion process by minimal parameter shifts – such as in dosage, processing tem- perature or pressure. Grafe has a portfolio of OEM colour formulations and supplies masterbatch and compound formulations for automotive interior colours to many manufactur- ers. The products are
