COLOUR AND MASTERBATCH | MATERIALS

In the shade: developments

in colours and masterbatch Recent innovations in colour and masterbatch include new medical grades, black and orange colorants for automotive and a chemical blowing agent that helps cut component weight

Few injection moulded parts are made from a base polymer and nothing else: a wide range of addi- tives – and possibly colorants – is needed to give components the properties they require. This can range from being the correct colour to having the ability to be properly decorated. Ampacet says that its ColorMark masterbatch additive technology enables processors to create permanent lettering and designs – in intricate detail – on dark plastic surfaces. Compatible with a range of plastics used in injection moulding, ColorMark provides high levels of contrast and shading on dark plastics that have been historically difficult to mark. It offers a solution for adding permanent colour logos, intricate

designs, serial numbers, QR codes and bar codes in applications including consumer electronics, automotive interiors and appliances. Ampacet’s technology reveals colour in black and dark plastic surfaces exposed to laser light. The product produces permanent, weather-resist- ant colour marking in six shades: red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple. Custom colours are also available.

Designed for thermal chemical surface reac-

tions, ColorMark formulations are suited for fibre, YAG and vanadate lasers operating at wavelengths of 1060-1070 nm. Formulation chemistries and laser configurations can be customised for desired marking contrast and functionality.
