Fit for purpose: plastics for medical applications

Resins that can be sterilised by a variety of techniques, and a copolyester valve that lowers patient risk during infusion therapy are some of the latest innovations in medical materials

The medical and pharmaceutical sectors typically use materials that adhere to rigorous standards – including quality, toxicity and biocompatibility. In addition, materials must be practical – and process- able into a variety of medical devices. Covestro has developed Apec 2045 – a highly

heat-resistant copolycarbonate that it says can help moulders and medical OEMs to cut production time and costs. This is because it can be used in applications that require over-moulding with liquid silicone rubber (LSR) for products such as respira- tory masks and others that need moulded-in seals. “This polycarbonate is made for high curing

temperatures in silicone over-moulding, helping customers more than double production volumes in the same amount of time due to shorter cycle times,” said Pierre Moulinie, global healthcare technology lead at Covestro. The company helped customers to simulate

material performance in specific applications and calculate cost benefits with its LSR calculator tool. As well as high heat resistance and productivity,

the material offers other benefits, including durability, transparency, biocompatibility, sterilis- ability and processability. Durability is delivered by its high heat resistance, while it has been tested for biocompatibility according to ISO 10993-1 and USP Class VI for contact of 30 days or less. The material also supports typical sterilisation methods used in the healthcare industry, including irradia- tion, autoclave and hot air. The grade was presented at the recent MD&M West event in the US.

Colours and additives US materials specialist Avient was also at MD&M West, showing a range of colours, additives and polymers.
