MUSHROOM DAYS PREVIEW Scully Grower Supplies, stand 12

Neil Scully is director of Scully Grower Supplies, Checkweighscales.com and Luman Shelving. His father started as a mushroom grower in 1969 in Co Armagh, Northern Ireland. “My father produced his own compost, built the farm up, first growing in wooden boxes, later on racks with blocks. He started in 3 block tunnels, eventually in 12 poly tunnels.” In 2000 they founded their own supply business, Scully Grower Supplies, at the farm loca- tion. Since then, they have provided a reliable service for mushroom growers and other agricultural businesses in Ire- land and beyond. Neil: “Some 95% of our turnover comes from the mushroom industry, but we supply to other sectors as well, like chemicals for garden centres or supplies for golf courses.” In 2018, Checkweighscales.com Ltd. was started, to address a major issue among Irish mushroom growers: under- and over- weighs, giving away too much produce. “The SS-45 Harvest scale provides a uni- que solution to this problem, increasing the kg/hour production output of the harvester. We see evidence of growers giving away as much as 1000 euros per week in overfilled punnets.” Asked if there is a future for small scale weighing systems, as weighing seems to be more and more incorporated in bigger automa- ted transport/weighing/packing systems, Neil says: “No, I don’t see these developments as a threat. The bigger farms will go for full automated systems, but a lot of farms can’t afford these expensive investments. We help the farms who are trying to maximize their yields and work within their con- traints.” In 2021, the company took over

Scully team.

AST Totten Ltd., which became Luman Shelving Ltd. “David Totten of AST was selling quality shelving all over the world and when he retired, we took over the company, it was a logical step. David’s shelving is well known throug- hout the mushroom industry as being a top quality product and we are delighted to continue with this work. We ship these Aluminium shelves all over the world and we are delighted with the customer feed- back. We don’t supply or produce machinery, or venture into turn-key projects; It’s a different business really, but never say never! We never stopped growing and every time we take a step up. We work a lot via reselling as well, with Nicolon growing nets, or being an agent for e-nema, and we supply lots of spare parts for the industry. What we really stand out for, besides our quality

products, is building up (personal) rela- tionships in everything we do, trying to visit all farms every 2 weeks, and our mushroom background is an important asset. We work very closely with C.M.P. Northway, F.F.P., CMG and M.P.O. gro- wer groups. With the scales design, for example, we discussed with them what exactly they wanted, and we can advise growers and demonstrate our products. We supply worldwide, but we don’t sell via a website. We like to speak to the grower in person.” At the fair, the com- pany will highlight some of their suc- cessful products, samples of shelving, sensors and of course the harvest scales. “We’re really looking forward to be at the Mushroom Days again, last edition was a great success for us, meeting new customers from Australia and New Zealand.”
