Frontpage photo: Cordyceps militaris, a species of fungus in the family Cordycipitaceae, an entomopathogenic fungus (parasitizes insects). Not exactly the mushroom that comes to mind perhaps, when you think of the Dutch Mushroom Days, but hey! It looks good!

The countdown has started. Very soon, the doors of the Brabanthallen exhibition complex will open again for another edition - the 36th - of the world’s largest and most influential trade event for the mushroom industry: the Dutch Mushroom Days. But getting so far has not been an easy ride. There were lots of obstacles in the past, but on this occasion, what with the corona pandemic, the conflict in Ukraine and the sub- sequent emergency stop on the proceedings by the exhibitors, at a certain point it seemed we had hit a dead end. But the pandemic ended, and a renewed commitment from the Dutch exhibitors, plus the organisers’ determination, have saved the event from suffering the same fate as the Floriade horticultural expo (= dead). Soon Hall 1 will be packed with stands represen- ting all the links in the mushroom chain relating to manufacturing, sales, research and more, to present their products and services to the thousands of visitors expected to attend. And, after a four-year break, with all the new har- vesting and automated systems, and new mycelium applications, there will be plenty on display. Despite, and also thanks to, the many struggles facing the industry, the suppliers in our sector never fail to find innovative solutions to be proud of. The majority are growing, and at some companies the lack of skilled and qualified labour is the only thing slowing down the speed of progress. The organisation and format are more or less unchanged. Some parts have had a little ‘touch up’, there is a new project team, and the Welcome Event has been retrofitted into a Network Party with live music. But you have to respect the classics! This trade event special - at 76 pages it is also the largest ever issue of Mushroom Business - offers plenty of input from, and space for, the exhibitors who also structurally support our publications. The Preview section gives a taster of what to expect from them in Den Bosch. And - as far as I could humanly tell - there’s only one contribution produced by ChatGPT! Our team is very much looking forward to meeting everyone of you again at the fair (stand 65) and hope you are too! Let’s go!!!
