Everyday Use Cases Back at Indian Prairie, Johnson explained he uses an in-house router to perform routing through Tyler’s software. The system allows office staff to see where the buses are at any given time. He noted that Indian Prairie was an early adopter of the Tyler Drive tablets, placing the devices on buses in 2019. He said adding this technology provided the district with real time visibility into their school bus locations, routes and student loads. It also helped the district cut routes, going from need- ing 315 drivers to 250, due to running more efficient routes and consolidations. Coming out of the pandemic, Indian Prairie also implemented the parent app. Other use cases of the Tyler Drive include when a student


is at a bus stop and doesn’t know if they are at the correct location. Johnson said drivers can look up that student on the tablet and confirm what route they are supposed to be on. If a student boards the wrong bus, the driver can look up directions for navigating to the child’s home. “There’s a benefit just outside of emergency situations,” he said, adding that the system allows kids to be account- ed for when they are transportation’s responsibility. Fort Mills also utilizes Tyler’s student transportation


software as well as the Tyler Drive tablets, which Purvis said links the bus driver with the routing software. “Drivers can receive turn-by-turn directions to stu- dents’ stop locations, student rosters, seating charts, and the ability to look up other registered students when needing to help students who miss or ride the wrong school bus.” He cited similar benefits as Johnson did. lets have allowed other drivers to cover routes when a school bus breaks down or is involved in a collision. Additionally, the district utilizes the Advanced Mainte- nance Module and the Advanced Trip Tracker. “These two add-on modules enable us to write up and track bus maintenance discrepancies from inside the bus and conduct field trips with turn-by-turn directions to and from activity destinations,” he added, noting that a Fort Mills is also looking to incorporate RFID cards. Meanwhile, Indian Prairie also utilizes three interior camera systems from Seon that have live viewing capa- bilities. If a student is having a seizure on board the bus, Johnson said staff get a live look in to provide support to the driver. Plus, they’re adding an external view camera that will be used for anything related to outside the bus, including illegal passing incidents. In addition to the Child Check Mate System to avoid leaving a student on board, Indian Prairie also utilizes a motion detection system from the company that sets off an alarm. Purvis said the Fort Mill school board and district
