She also said she stays alert for other refreshers. “Anytime any business offers free online training classes, I sign up all my drivers and make it man- datory to complete,” she said. “My thought process is you can never over-teach on a subject,” she noted. “We have a very important job, and safety is number one at all times.” DeHaven advised making sure staff fully under- stands how the wheelchair securements and the
lift work, even when there is a loss in vehicle power. As an example, she said using the manual handle to operate the lift is a good check to determine if the person oper- ating a wheelchair bus is able to safely operate the lift in such a situation.
