been expanding her knowledge of the industry and has a developed a career goal of becoming a transportation director. Last November, McCulley moved into the permanent

route substitute position, which allows her to drive over 100 different routes at a moment’s notice, with- out the use of GPS aides. Then in January, she started the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation certi- fied commercial driver’s license school bus instructor training course. Now that she passed, she manages the district’s training program. “McCulley is very inquisitive and looks for ways to

continue her professional development,” he said. “She is currently learning the basics of route design and the importance of maintaining accurate documentation for state reporting. She has been a valuable asset to the transportation department and one day will make an outstanding director of transportation.” McCulley noted that she is currently responsible for

creating and overseeing theory classroom, one-on-one, in-vehicle training, and the recertification of existing drivers. “In this position I assisted the district in com-

plying with the new FMCSA [entry level driver training] program, which included ensuring our theory cur- riculum and vehicle training meets the requirements, logging training hours, administering tests, and record keeping. I am constantly in communication with our lo- cal intermediate unit and the PennDot school bus unit,” she added.

She noted that for this school year, she will be working

with drivers to create seating charts and offer techniques and suggestions on preventing and stopping negative student behavior. Going forward, McCulley said she will continue

advancing her knowledge and career path in pupil trans- portation, while also being the best driver she can be. “I will be continuing my mentoring with director Ber-

nhart,” she said. “I look forward to learning the basics of routing, how the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act affects student transportation, how to write bid spec- ifications to purchase garage supplies and new vehicles, and other administrative duties. It is my goal to move into a supervisory position when one becomes available.”
