actually see that [route change] take effect,” he said. “With the tablets when we do that address change, for example, that night it is uploaded to the tablet and the driver has the information the next day.” Despite the many changes the district

underwent this school year, which started on Aug. 29, Freeman noted a very successful startup resulted in good press. He said local media organizations interviewed transportation professionals on the positive changes as well as the addition of the new parent app to show the arrival of buses. “A lot of positive feedback was coming from

the community about the startup,” Feeman said, adding that a lot of it is driven by the technology. “It’s easy to train drivers if they have an electronic route sheet that will guide them along the route. It’s easier when a driver starts to get overwhelmed and fall behind to be able to move work around to a different driver, without having to try to send a copy route sheet to a school or send a picture over the phone.” Freeman added that additionally the district

hired an IT professional that only works with transportation to help keep the new products up and running properly.

Implementing More Changes Bryan Perryman, the transportation director

for River Road ISD in Texas, said the district implemented Transfinder’s routing software about six years ago to help with the routing process. “It also has all the streets, addresses and everything there,” he said of the software. “And then I can just build from there and go step-by- step, and then it draws a line.” Because he’s looking at the route overview, he

can also make changes if he detects an easier route for the driver, or if he must consolidate routes due to the school bus driver shortage. “We’ve had to cut routes before COVID-19,” he said. “But anytime we have to get rid of a route, we can actually take that overall view and look at it say, ‘Okay, these students would go easier on this route.’” Perryman noted that about 1,300 students

attend the district, and they transport around 550 students. He explained that the district is a smaller district with four school sites and is considered a lower income district. “Our
