MIGUEL TRUJILLO Lead Mechanic San Marcos Unified School District in California Recent State Inspection Score: 100 percent Fleet Size: 74 school buses, 35 white fleet vehicles
Miles Traveled: 650,000 per school year Number of Technicians: 3 Before Miguel Trujillo began logging over 33 years as a public
servant, he served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps. He started working at North County Transit District, where he spent 21 years. Then he moved to San Marcos Unified School District in June 2013 and hit the ground running. Trujillo completely turned around the transportation mainte-
nance facility, making it the safe and efficient department it is today. In fact, a California Highway Patrol inspector found not one violation in the district’s 35 school buses during the most recent biannual inspection. This was quite a feat, especially since most of the buses were 15 to 20 years old. Mike Sawyer, executive director of transportation, said that
Trujillo is responsible for overseeing all of the mechanical di- agnostics, repairs, preventative maintenance, documentation, purchase orders, mandatory vehicles inspections and mainte- nance facility inspections. He also hosts instructional classes for other neighboring district mechanics Trujillo starts his day at 5:30 a.m. by reporting a bus fleet sta-
tus report to the dispatcher. He then reviews the previous day’s driver bus inspections and places buses out of service for any safety concerns, before coordinating other repairs throughout the day. Trujillo said he loves every second of the day, because he is making a difference in his community. “It gives me a sense of accomplishment and great satisfaction
knowing that I run one of the safest fleets of school buses in San Diego County. My goal since my date of hire has been to provide safe, reliable, transportation for our drivers, and the hundreds of kids that we transport on a daily basis,” Trujillo said. Sawyer lauded Trujillo for his excellent work ethic and posi-
tive attitude. Sawyer said he is a professional, dependable and self-motivated employee who takes great pride in his craft.
“Miguel takes great pride in his craft, which requires him to always stay informed and educated on performance testing and diagnostic technology. … He goes above and beyond, which shows in the top quality, highly praised and beautifully maintained fleet that we have here at San Marcos Unified School District.”
—Mike Sawyer, Executive Director of Transportation for San Marcos Unified School District
