powertrain and service network that supports our cus- tomers like never before.” In June 2016, IC Bus announced the expansion of its
medium-duty engine offerings to include the Cum- mins L9 engine for its RE Series school bus that became available in 2017. At that time, Trish Reed, VP/GM of IC Bus observed that, “Adding the proven, market-accept- ed Cummins L9 to the RE Series is fundamental to our strategy to provide our customers with the broadest se- lection of mid-range diesel engines.” That development is providing its customers “with a winning combination of uptime, performance and durability.” The Cummins 9-liter, which is rated up to 380 horse-
power with 1,250 lb.-ft. of torque, features flexible horsepower and torque ratings for bus applications. The RE Series school bus was designed based on the needs of its customers. It focused on passenger safety, driver comfort, vehicle durability and serviceability. Then in 2018, IC Bus introduced the Cummins B6.7 en- gine to the RE Series school bus. Its 6.7-liter engine, which is rated up to 325 horsepower with 750 lb.-ft of torque, is engineered for fuel efficiency, reliability and durability. The RE Series school bus with Cummins engines is manufac- tured at the company’s Tulsa, Oklahoma, assembly plant.
Justin Cocchiola, the integrated marketing manager at
IC Bus, told STN that, “Navistar and IC Bus are fully en- gaged in the development of electric powertrains for our truck and bus vehicle platforms. We added Gary Horvat in the role of vice president of e-mobility, to manage a new department to focus on these technologies.” Cocchiola reported that Horvat and the IC bus team have
been “consulting with government officials, utility compa- nies and school bus operators, to ensure that our electric school bus design incorporates not only the voice of the customer, but input from various stakeholders. With Gary’s leadership and extensive electric vehicle experience, we are confident that customers will successfully integrate our electric school buses into their fleets. We are excited about adding an electric bus to our product line and expect to deliver our first buses to customers in 2020.” And in the all-electric market, there are now more than 200 zero-emission Lion Electric vehicles trans- porting over 14,000 students daily in North America, according to company executives. ●
