Mechanic is Recognized Posthumously for Helpful Nature
Jason Johnson was killed while on duty on Oct. 29, 2018 at Pulaski County Special School District in Arkansas. On that day, the mechanic was called to
service a school bus, after finishing another job. He left in a different school bus than he used to drive to that location. Johnson exited the school bus after noticing the door to the wheel- chair lift gate had opened. After walking to the rear to close the gate, the school bus air brake disengaged, and the bus began to roll downhill. Johnson ran alongside the bus, attempting to get back on board, but was struck and killed. Jamie Coleman, the district’s route su- pervisor, said Johnson had over 11 years of experience. Coleman reported that John- son worked very hard to make sure all buses passed inspection and stayed on the line throughout the year. Johnson always helped others in need—sometimes even on their personal vehicles. Johnson was soft spoken and never showed any anger, always having a gentle smile on his face, Coleman recalled. “I am nominating Mr. Johnson, because his
work ethic and character were remarkable. He is truly missed. Although this award is for 2019, he was our ‘Garage Star’ for the 2018- 2019 school year,” Coleman noted. Johnson is remembered by his wife and two young sons, who are pictured with him, above.
