Head Mechanic David Rickard (foreground) demonstrates to (from left to right) student Justin Smith, job coach Mark Hitchcock and student Dillion Hart how to use the green parts washing machine, cleaning brake components as a part of the Work Base Learning program at Rotterdam- Mohonasen Central School District in New York state.

you are always learning something,” Rickard said. Ways in which Rickard said he is constantly learning is by keeping up with the training and knowledge of new equipment. Transportation Director Randy Jerreld said that Rickard cares about the safety of their students and staff. He is constantly go- ing the extra mile to make sure the buses are in the best possible condition to carry out that job. Rotterdam-Mohonasen CSD started a Work Base Learning Pro-

gram, so over the past several years, students have been coming to the shop. What originally started as students visiting the garage to help with mowing the lawns, taking out the trash and additional cleaning, turned into Rickard letting the students into the shop to teach them about the school buses and proper safety techniques. Rickard stressed that the students are taught proper safety

equipment practices, depending on the type of tools they are using. Every semester, a new group of kids arrives. Last year, Rick- ard received the Mentor of the Year Award, through the school district’s Work Base Learning Program. “The neat thing about it is, it’s almost like, you get to put them

out there and feel their expertise. You see what they are good at and what they are comfortable with, and you can work with them from there,” Rickard said. Not surprisingly, Franklin added that the students love working

at their facility. Rickard said the program has been very rewarding. He has a

great time working with the students and showing them what a bus garage is like on a daily basis.

“They not only do some cleaning, yard work and taking out the trash, Dave has them learning about the buses and doing some simple jobs around the shop. The students love working at our facility and working with Dave. He cares about the safety of our students and staff. He goes the extra mile to make sure our buses are in the best possible condition to do that job.”
