Smart Electric Powering The concept of smart fueling and data collection


doesn’t only apply to diesel, propane and gasoline buses. Smart powering is especially relevant to electric buses, which can be programmed to charge during off-peak hours, or on a staggered schedule in the case of large fleets. With electric buses, smart powering often calls for


support from the utility. Charlie Ott, director of trans- portation at Fremont Unified School District in northern California, has been frustrated on this front. He has long been in talks with utility company PG&E about adding powering infrastructure to the bus yard for a large order of electric vehicles. But Ott hasn’t received the help he said he was originally promised. Ott said he has been working with a “moving target” since PG&E initially promised to perform the trench- ing, platform construction and more for the district. But since a devastating fire last fall in Paradise, California was traced back to old and faulty PG&E equipment,
