ing the electric drive system from Allison Transmission’s new AXE Series as a bolt-in system. The system features motors and other components, such as pumps, oil coolers and a two-speed gearbox. “We are working with the new Allison, which recently

acquired AxleTech, on programs where Allison is sup- plying the e-Axle, and Agility is providing battery packs, as well as complete drivetrain integration,” explained Charlie Silio, vice president of strategy, corporate devel- opment and marketing for Agility. “Again, though, these programs are currently focused on the heavy-duty truck and medium-duty delivery vehicle markets, not yet on school buses.” Silio intimated that school buses will eventually adopt the new configurations in their hybrid-electric drives. Agility is already supplying Thomas Built Buses with complete end- to-end propane systems for the Saf-T-Liner C2 Propane school buses, including the Freightliner DriveForce 8.0L propane engine that is made by Agility.

New Corporate Initiatives In May, Allison Transmission and Cummins announced

certification from the California Air Resources Board (ARB) for the model year 2019 Allison Hybrid 40/50 Electric

Propulsion (H 40/50 EP) system, paired with the Cummins B6.7 and L9 diesel-electric hybrid engines that are used in transit buses and coaches. Company executives said the Allison H 40/50 EP

improves fuel economy by up to 25 percent over similar diesel buses. In addition, its regenerative braking capa- bility can significantly extend the brake change interval by up to 350 percent.

The Cummins B6.7 is the leading diesel engine for

large school buses. The engine, when paired with the Al- lison electric hybrid-propulsion system, are part of both articulated and straight transit buses. Barbara Chance, director of mobile source regulatory

compliance for Allison Transmission, noted that Allison is the first electric hybrid-propulsion system to be certified for transit coaches and buses in California. The Cummins B6.7 and L9 diesel-electric hybrid engines feature “proven technology that is designed and developed in-house, and optimized to deliver the efficiency, durability and performance on which transit bus customers depend,” executives there said. The B6.7 diesel-electric hybrid engine is rated at 280 hp (209 kW), while the L9 diesel-electric hybrid engine is rated at 330 hp (246 kW) for the transit bus market.
