on time, 95 percent of the time. The bus ride durations also had to be less than one hour, and eventually no longer than 45 minutes. Accomplishing those goals, which had to be balanced with an ongoing driver shortage, necessitated that a third tier be added. The result, Jackson said, has been improved on- time performance, reduced overcrowding on buses and fewer disciplinary issues. Bibb County also implemented a free parent app,

overseen expansion with the opening of two new school sites. Jackson said a new phase of one of the district’s five high schools starts next school year, with a new elementary school planned after that. This has led to continued transportation streamlining, con- densed routing, in some instances reduced bus loads, and a reduced number of schools and facilities served. “We’re currently working to increase the wireless


capabilities for accessing school video without having to physically walk to the school bus,” Jackson added. He said the district will also soon begin piloting turn- by-turn navigation, electronic school bus inspections, driver time and attendance, and student tracking. Jones also said he is committed to the previous ad- ministration’s decision to introduce propane into the school bus operations. The district currently runs 83 Type C propane school buses out of a total fleet of 200.


Driving Change Another example of positive change has been the


relationship between the administration and the school bus drivers. Jones described a scene that can be repli- cated across the country. Bus drivers were dissatisfied with their wages and working conditions. A group of
