radio communications between the drivers and the base. “It gives us trans- parent oversight over what is going on daily in the field,” Brady said. “That would definitely be one of the recom- mendations I would make to anyone that is considering a contractor.” Brady added that while the drivers
are employees of the contractor, the district has a say in where they work or if they work. “If a driver is not suc- cessful at one school, I have the ability to move the driver to another school,” Brady said. “If I feel the driver will not be successful at all, I can remove that driver from the district. (But) we do try to help them be successful first.”
The two most common things I’ve seen in bids are cameras in the bus and
GPS.” —Dave Armbrecht, Regional Director for Cook-Illinois
Looking Forward Cook-Illinois’ Armbrecht said another way a contractor saves school districts money, is with the technology that is available at a set, contractual price. He is seeing this trend in the bid requests. “The two most common things
I’ve seen in bids are cameras in the bus and GPS,” Armbrecht noted. “Pretty much every bid that comes out includes GPS. I think the next big turn will be a student tracking app, so parents will be able to track the bus their student is riding in, and get an estimate on when it will arrive.” First Student’s Gilbert said that as technology advances outside the school bus, parents and admin- istrators will expect those same
technology products to be available on the school bus. “Wi-Fi, on-board cameras with real-time viewing, and school bus track-
ing with parent notification, are consistently requested,” Gilbert said. “There is also an elevated desire for stop arm cameras and student ridership track- ing. The student transportation industry must be able to incorporate this suite of products, which will allow for an even safer student bus journey.” ●
