“We were losing drivers to higher-paying jobs,
so we were able to increase the hourly salary from $12.87 to $15.00 last October. That’s made a significant improvement in our ability to attract drivers and keep them,” Johnson said. “All of our drivers are full-time with benefits, too, unless we need part-time drivers.” With affordable housing in high demand, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg district has seen an increase in students who are eligible for trans- portation under the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act. The McKinney-Vento Act is designed to “address the challenges that home- less children and youths have faced in enrolling, attending and succeeding in school.” Of the nearly 100,000 students who are trans- ported by the district’s 1,088-bus fleet each day,
