Purchasing Trends


A total of 288 readers with the titles of transportation director, supervisor or manager responded to a survey asking how they are using or planning to use Volkswagen Mitigation Trust Fund grants, cooperative purchasing and contracting to more efficiently use their capital and operations budgets. We also asked how they are using new technology, the acceptance of parent-facing apps and the challenges that school district growth present to transportation. Editor’s Note—Not all responses total 100 percent.

57% said they won’t be applying for VW funds to purchase new fueling infrastructure,


24% said they don’t know yet, and only 6% said they will apply for these funds. (Out of 243 responses. The total does not equal 100; the question did not apply to all respondents.)


Only 2% said they currently have CNG fuel stations on site. (Out of 242 responses.)


Over 14% said they currently have propane fuel stations on site. (Out of 244 responses.)


Only 2% said they currently have electric charging stations on site. (Out of 242 responses.)


But 23% said they are interested in installing any type of fueling or charging station on site. (Out of 240 responses.)


41% said their operation uses group or cooperative purchasing,


48% do not, 5% don’t know, and 1% said they plan to use it. (Out of 276 responses. The total does not equal 100; the question did not apply to all respondents.)


12%said they currently offer a school bus location/arrival app for parents, while 17%


said they plan to offer an app. (Out of 271 responses.)
