Anchoring Raising the Anchor


It is useful to know where the anchor lies when motoring up to it. Ask the crew to point to its location by looking at the angle of the chain relative to the bow. If the anchorage is muddy, a bucket and brush may be required.


Normally, the boat will be lying to either wind or tide.


Slowly motor towards the anchor while the crew take in the slack. Motor too fast, and the chain or rope may end up around the prop.


A near-vertical pull is required to free the anchor.


Stay in sheltered water while the anchor and chain are put away. Ensure the anchor and anchor locker are secure before putting to sea.


Bring the anchor aboard, clean off biofouling, and stow securely. This should be done where you were anchored to avoid assisting the spread of non- native species and causing ecological and economic damage.


Breaking Out


If the anchor will not budge, secure the cable and motor forward to break the anchor out.
