Anchoring Anchoring


When choosing a suitable location to drop anchor, the skipper must consider a variety of things. First, though, the skipper must choose a location suitable from an environmental perspective, ensuring that vessels are allowed to anchor there and following the advice from the Green Blue on how to anchor sustainably. • Check whether protected seabed habitats are present before anchoring


• Choose anchorages away from sensitive habitats wherever possible


• Use existing moorings or ideally Advanced Eco-Mooring Systems (AMS) instead of anchoring in seagrass


• Select the right anchor type for the seabed to reduce drag


• Aim for bare sand and avoid the edges of seagrass beds. Consider the swing area of your chain


• If dragging, recover and re-anchor. If it persists, relocate


Scope and Swinging Room Scope


Remember the basic principles. An anchor works best when the pull from the boat is closest to horizontal.


Check the depth and tidal range. Use a scope (length) of anchor cable at least four times the depth for chain and six times for rope/chain combinations. If in doubt, let more out.
