10 QUESTIONS 10 QUESTIONS WITH...
DAVID FREEAR, PILGRIMS GROUP LTD. Each month we ask an industry professional the Tomorrow’s FM 10 Questions. This month, we chatted to David Freear, Chief Operating Officer, Pilgrims Group Ltd.
Q4
IF MONEY WAS NO OBJECT, WHAT CAR
WOULD YOU BUY? I’d love to drive a Bugatti Veyron! However, I’d really like a Lamborghini Gallardo but would probably go for a Porsche 911 just because they are a little more discreet.
Q5
HOW WOULD YOU IMPROVE THE FACILITIES
Q1 Q2
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB?
Shelf Stacker/Trolley Collector as a student at Sainsbury’s.
HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE FACILITIES
MANAGEMENT INDUSTRY? It was a desire to raise standards of service delivery and customer satisfaction, in particular to improve and develop industry leading training making it easier to deploy and access, along with the opportunity to use the skills I developed over a successful career in the Royal Air Force.
Q3
WHO, IN ANY OTHER INDUSTRY, DO YOU
MOST ADMIRE? Sir Alex Ferguson, he has shown that you don’t always need to follow convention to make things work and be successful. To stay at the top of your game for so long in a cut throat business is a phenomenal achievement.
58 | TOMORROW’S FM
MANAGEMENT INDUSTRY? The facilities management industry could be improved by recruiting and retaining professional high calibre management personnel, ensuring effective and ongoing training is provided for those individuals, and offering suitable financial and career incentives to maintain maximum delivery on contract. Furthermore, regular training for the shop floor staff that’s easy to access and provides real benefits.
Q6
WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU
WERE GROWING UP? It was one of two, number one was an astronaut – I always wanted and still do want to walk on the moon. Number two was a fighter pilot; I almost made that one, but after being selected found myself in the middle of defence cuts and the opportunity disappeared.
Q7 Q8
WHAT DO YOU DO TO UNWIND?
I love wakeboarding, I’m very active and this gives me the chance to enjoy something that’s both physical and fun. On the other end of the scale I really enjoy creating – as a result I do gardening and DIY.
IF YOU COULD HOST A DINNER PARTY WITH
ANY THREE GUESTS, DEAD
OR ALIVE, WITH A FOURTH COOKING AND A FIFTH PROVIDING THE MUSIC, WHO
WOULD THEY BE AND WHY? I think they would be Sir Alex Ferguson, Henry VIII, and Queen Elizabeth II, as she has met every world leader and person of note since the 1930’s. Gordon Ramsay is a great Chef I’m sure the evening would not be dull with him cooking and Elvis Presley had such a rich, amazing, super-smooth voice, it would be great to hear him in person.
Q9
WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE FUTURE OF THE
FACILITIES MANAGEMENT
INDUSTRY? Further and ongoing consolidation of UK business with continued interest in market acquisition by international facilities management companies. At the same time those SME facilities management companies who have tight control of their operations and costs. Looking further ahead we are likely to see technology, in particular smart IT solutions and robotic or remotely monitored innovations having an impact.
Yonas Saleem, Guest Service Manager at Bennett Hay, asks:
Q10
WHAT IS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE
EXPERIENCE OF AN INTERACTION WITH A FACILITIES TEAM MEMBER AS A ‘GUEST’/BUILDING USER IN
A WORKPLACE? One person comes to mind in Surrey where she runs all the facilities functions for the client but runs it in a seamless way, everything happens behind the scenes in a planned, quiet and professional manner.
