VENDING & WATER COOLERS

Over the last ten years the coffee vending industry has undergone a dramatic transformation, ditching its reputation for providing poor quality coffee in bland plastic cups to provide a wide range of hot drinks that can match the offering from today’s popular high street coffee chains. It’s not just the quality of beverage that has changed either, with vending machines increasingly offering a sleek and stylish design, as well as integrating modern technology to further enhance vending capabilities.

CATERING CREDENTIALS The vending industry in the UK

grabbed the bull by the horns in order to re-establish the sector and its credentials. Working collaboratively vending suppliers set about improving the image of the industry in the eyes of consumers, while providing gourmet quality coffee, as well as a vastly improved customer experience.

“GOOD QUALITY

ESPRESSO MACHINES ARE IMPORTANT FOR AN ARTISAN COFFEE BAR BUT A SUPER

AUTOMATIC MACHINE MIGHT BE MORE APPROPRIATE IN BUSY CANTEENS.”

Jacobs Douwe Egberts Professional played an important role in driving the sectors resurgence, promoting the first fresh bean vending solutions and working with its established partners to provide consumers with a level of coffee quality comparable to that available from traditional espresso machines. The company also introduced a double-walled vending cup in partnership with Hutamaki, further enhancing the perception of vended coffee by providing an insulated cup of a similar quality to that provided by high street coffee shops.

“WE EXPECT TO SEE MOBILE PAYMENTS AND FACIAL

RECOGNITION BEING INTEGRATED DURING THE NEXT FEW YEARS.”

HIGH END AND

HIGH STREET In the last ten years, the expansion of the high street coffee shop market has meant that consumers have become increasingly expectant of great tasting quality coffee in any setting. As a result, vended coffee offerings have had to match this. In fact, consumer perceptions of vending have truly turned a corner that is clearly evident in the growth of the gourmet vending sector that grew by 27% last year, a level of growth larger than that of the high street UK coffee shop market, with the vending sector now worth an estimated £230 million. But whilst levels of quality available from both coffee shops and vended offerings can be similar, the vending industry continues to innovate in terms of usability in order to maintain levels of consumer confidence.

We expect to see the latest retail technology, such as mobile payments and even facial recognition being integrated into vending machines during the next few years. In fact, our colleagues in South Africa offered an innovative twist on this a few years ago by creating a machine that dispensed hot beverages to yawning consumers. Alongside these technological innovations, we’ll also see the emergence of vended product cross-overs, with complementary products such as pre-wrapped pastries and snacks being dispensed alongside hot beverages.

TRUSTED SOLUTIONS In order to provide reassurances

at an operational level, Jacobs Douwe Egberts Professional has

built excellent mutually beneficial relationships with vending operators and machine manufacturers alike. The vending industry thrives on collaboration which means we’re able to work closely with machine providers to produce solutions that provide excellent tasting coffee while reducing costs for the operator.

SELF-SERVICE SUCCESS Earlier this year, for example, we

worked with both Regency Design and N&W Global Vending to launch a self-service machine which offers espresso bean coffee, instant, fresh-brew tea and skimmed milk while eliminating many of the classic issues associated with coffee production. It’s through such collaboration that Jacobs Douwe Egberts is able to provide such a comprehensive product portfolio, capable of catering to all consumer tastes with eye-catching machine graphics that provide a quality branded point of service that engages the end-user.

“THE VENDING

SECTOR IS NOW WORTH AN ESTIMATED

£230 MILLION.”

The emergence of the gourmet vending sector presents a fantastic opportunity for facilities managers and operators to modernise their vended coffee offerings. A fresh bean solution provided by a reputable name offers reassurances regarding operational practicality, safety and return on investment, with consumers loyal to brands they recognise and trust. Having played an important role in the resurgence of the vending industry, and with the growth of the gourmet vending sector in the ascendency, we expect to see our vending business grow as we in turn continue to provide profitable solutions for our customers.”
