“SOFTWARE WILL WORK ON

THE PRINCIPLE THAT WHEN EQUIPMENT

IS ABOUT TO FAIL IT OFTEN CONSUMES MORE ENERGY.”

An additional benefit of this software is that it will aid Data Centres to not only maintain uninterrupted service, but also help them to maintain optimum levels of service while at the same time being energy efficient. Fine-tuning equipment reduces energy consumption and saves customers money but is also an essential part of Westway’s commitment to sustainability.

As part of our corporate social responsibility, Westway is committed to raising environmental performance and acting in the best interests of the wider community. If we can make sure equipment is optimised and is using the right amount of energy, instead of using more than it should, then we’re contributing to a cleaner, greener environment.

This new software complements our USP of having integrated in- house teams of engineers. As well as caring for the environment, we

are a people orientated business and prefer to build loyalty and in-house knowledge – rather than sub-contract out services.

Our customers share a lot of information about what goes on in their business in order for us to be able to maintain the incredible complexity of scheduling maintenance. We feel that that same principle of working closely together and building relationships ought to apply to our own teams of people.

Firstly, we would argue that having in-house teams – as opposed to sub-contracting - means we can offer more control over the service as we are not reliant on a third party. Obviously, having more services in-house also passes on cost benefits to the customer in that they are not having to pay an additional margin on a margin.

Secondly, our teams of mechanical and electrical engineers are integrated as one team that facilitates shared

knowledge. The electrical engineers, for example, build knowledge around cooling systems because they are working with colleagues rather than sub-contractors. On an individual level, it also aids professional career development.

Our commitment to developing our employees is also illustrated by our apprenticeship programme. The challenge with developing a skilled pool of employees for the future is that in order to work in a Data Centre environment, you have to experience it. As a company we have made a conscious decision to ensure that apprentices, as part of their four year training programme, gain supervised Data Centre exposure.

As a result we build a wealth of in-house knowledge and expertise and this new software will boost this insight further. It is about getting the most out of the resources we have and working smarter.
