GOING FOR GOLD: ARAMARK APPRENTICES RAISE THE BAR

Aramark, provider of food, facilities management and uniform services explains what it takes to be the best when it comes to training your apprentices.

Aramark’s apprenticeship training has really raised the bar with its preparation of young UK staff. The facilities giant saw 12 team members become its first in the country to graduate with a new Higher Level 4 Apprenticeship in Hospitality Management.

Delivered in partnership with Hospitality Industry Training (HIT), and taking around 18 months to complete, the course comprises both an NVQ (National Vocational Qualification) and BTEC (British and Technology Education Council) qualification.

Andrew Main, Aramark’s UK chief executive who presented certificates to graduates with Jill Whittaker, HIT managing director said: “This course is one of the most demanding in the hospitality industry and it needs real dedication to complete.

”Participants have to cultivate a wide range of skills and must learn how to, for example, develop hospitality teams, better understand financial performance management and focus on providing great customer service.

“We place real value on the development of our team members, both for their own career progression and to help ensure we deliver a fantastic experience to our clients and customers. My sincere congratulations go to our first 12 recipients and I look forward to celebrating the achievements of even more Higher Level 4 graduates in the future.”

The graduating team comes from across the country and works at a range of client sites, from offices

to colleges and military bases. One of the graduates, Mark Jones – a general manager at one if Aramark’s college sites, said: “I think this is a great programme for junior managers that want to take the step up to senior management, and something I really enjoyed.”

“EMPLOYEES ARE

GIVEN OPPORTUNITIES TO COMPLETE INTERMEDIATE,

ADVANCED & HIGHER

LEVEL APPRENTICESHIPS IN CULINARY,

HOSPITALITY, BUSINESS AND MANAGEMENT.”

Another graduate commented: “Now I have completed the course I see my business in a slightly different way. I still have an overriding commitment to providing excellent services for my clients and customers, however, I can now stand back and look at each core area of my business and truly understand how to grow it by implementing change and developing people.”

The calibre of the group of 12 graduates was reinforced by HIT Training naming one of them, Ashley Allen, as it’s ‘Higher Apprentice of the Year 2015’.

The Higher Level Apprenticeship forms part of Aramark’s continued commitment to developing and training its employees, and comes as the number of those completing

apprenticeships within its UK business now stands at 450.

The organisation works in conjunction with local colleges and universities to deliver the Aramark Apprenticeship Programme across its key sectors including business & industry, education, offshore, defence, healthcare and judicial markets. Employees are given opportunities to complete Intermediate, Advanced & Higher Level apprenticeships in culinary, hospitality, business and management.

Margaret Wood, from Aramark’s Learning and Development team, says: “It has been fantastic to see our team develop and grow as this apprenticeship course has progressed. We believe in investing in our people and this course sees our mission to deliver experiences that enrich and nourish lives in action. This can only serve to benefit the working lives and careers of our managers and ultimately the experiences of the customers we serve.”

In addition to providing on-site training from training partners, Aramark’s apprentices are also supported by on and off job training, workshops and development activities. An online Learning Centre, which supports apprentices’ learning and self-development, and offers e-learning access to boost their wider development, is also provided.

These and other initiatives led Aramark to win the first Cost Sector Catering award for training and apprenticeships earlier this year.
