10 QUESTIONS
10 QUESTIONS WITH... GRAHAM BIRD
In each issue we ask an FM professional the Tomorrow’s FM 10 Questions, this month we spoke to Graham Bird, Workplace Director from Where We Work.
Q1
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB?
My first full-time job was as a commercial kitchen designer. However, before that I had a string of part time jobs as a farm hand, butcher, shelf stacker and shoe salesman.
Q2 Q3
Q4 Q5
HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE FACILITIES
MANAGEMENT INDUSTRY?
I morphed from a supermarket planner with J Sainsbury’s, into a role within R&D and finally joined their office planning team. My first senior facilities manager role was with HBOS.
WHO, IN ANY OTHER INDUSTRY,
DO YOU MOST ADMIRE?
Eddie Jones the new England Rugby Manager, for his clear vision, focus, ability to motivate and not get distracted from his goal.
IF MONEY WAS NO OBJECT, WHAT CAR
WOULD YOU BUY?
I’m not into cars. But if we’re talking boats it would be a Redfinn 10,000
HOW WOULD YOU IMPROVE THE
FACILITIES MANAGEMENT
INDUSTRY? I come from a time, work and method- study background where we were taught how to objectively observe and gather empirical data. A lot of decisions get made on our perception of what we think is happening rather than what is happening. We should all find the time to watch the interactions between people and the places we manage.
70 | TOMORROW’S FM Q6
WHAT DID YOU WANT TO
BE WHEN YOU WERE
GROWING UP? A train driver or time traveller.
Maybe I should have been a Southern Rail driver; I could arrive at any time unannounced or not arrive at all.
Q7
IF YOU COULD HAVE A SUPER
POWER FOR A DAY, WHAT WOULD IT BE AND WHY?
To be able to read the minds of the people I interact with and see if I understand their body language correctly.
Q8
IF YOU COULD HOST A DINNER
PARTY WITH ANY THREE GUESTS, DEAD OR ALIVE, WHO WOULD THEY BE
AND WHY? Albert Einstein, Isaac Newton, and a scientist from 500 years hence; it would be a fascinating conversation as to how science has steadily peeled back the layers of understanding of the forces around us.
Q9
WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE
FUTURE OF THE FACILITIES
MANAGEMENT INDUSTRY? A real focus on the quality building and management available to us to ensure we become proactive to our customer’s needs and to get to the point where we truly meet the individual’s requirements.
Q10
NEIL RICKETTS, TECHNICAL
SERVICES DIRECTOR AT TRIGION: HOW HIGH DOES THE SECURITY OF YOUR FACILITY RATE AMONG
YOUR PRIORITIES? We prefer to be agile and work mainly from client sites. What we are mindful of is the importance of protecting client information. This is shared in confidence and can often be business critical.
