phs Wastekit, one of the UK’s largest providers of balers and compactors, surveyed key decision makers in retail, hospitality and food manufacturing to learn more about each sectors’ waste management habits. Here's what they had to say.


FM decision makers across retail, hospitality and food manufacturing need a better understanding of the revenue opportunities of their waste cardboard, according to phs Wastekit, as its latest survey reveals that one in ten still do not know that they can make money from their business’ waste cardboard.


As well as highlighting the opportunities many FMs in these sectors are missing via cardboard rebates from waste collectors, the survey showed that younger decision makers were also less likely to take up any rebates they were aware of. A third of businesses where the decision maker is age 34-45 do not receive any rebates for either cardboard or plastic recycling.


“It’s a surprising statistic,” said Jason Smith, Managing Director of phs Wastekit. “We would expect the younger

generation of FMs to be more open and aware of these opportunities. Not only does it generate extra income and save costs, it plays an important part in CSR and carbon reduction strategies, which are key factors for modern businesses. In fact, 72% of businesses surveyed have a carbon reduction plan and 81% have a CSR strategy in place.


“It is concerning that the younger generation, which will continue to shape the future of their chosen industries, are making the mistake of not assessing their ancillary costs in the same way as they do their core costs," Smith continued.


The survey highlighted the differences between the sectors in terms of their engagement with modern waste management solutions and commitment to environmental objectives.
