STREET CLEANING: CHEWING GUM vs
POT HOLES Thoughtlessly discarded chewing gum is not only a nuisance to the general public, it is a huge headache to the authorities and FM companies who have to remove it not only from our pavements and roads but also shopfloors, airports and railway stations. Recent research by Keep Britain Tidy found that approx. 64% of all roads and pavements are stained by chewing gum.
This anti-social issue is now so bad that the Local Government Association, which represents more than 370 councils in England and Wales, is calling for gum manufacturers to contribute to the £60m annual costs that councils have to pay to remove the gum. To

put this into perspective; it said this would enable councils, which are experiencing ongoing funding pressures, to fill in more than a million potholes.

Discarded gum removed from London’s well-trafficked Oxford, Regent, and Bond Streets in recent years amounted to 86,000 square meters of icky sticky mess. The issue in London is so bad that a group of volunteers from the CGAG (Chewing Gum Action Group) roamed the grey pavements of these well walked streets circling each and every gum splotch with bright yellow chalk. The effect, the group says, was “eye-catching” and “measle-like”— but also a little pretty. These types of campaigns create real results and in recent years, participating areas saw a 38% reduction in gum litter throughout

the course the campaign. One saw a 90% reduction.
OspreyDeepclean, manufacturer & supplier of the dry steam based GumBusters technology have always firmly advocated a similar ‘see it clean, keep it clean’ attitude and this is reflected in their innovative technology. Their GB1 was the world’s first cordless and battery powered dry steam unit specifically designed for gum removal quickly followed by the GB Eco which, as the name suggests, is a smaller version of the larger machine. It is designed and manufactured to be cordless, simple and quiet.
Thomas Stuecken, Chairman of OspreyDeepclean added: “Acting on the demands of the industry, the next logical step was cable free and generator free steam production. These virtually silent units can be used anywhere and at any time without causing a disturbance for up to six hours and two hours respectively.”
Always at the forefront of design and development, this latest innovation is the introduction of the GumBusters GB Eco Lithium battery technology to being one of the most versatile machine – easily manoeuvrable and lightweight at just 37Kg.
Discarded gum and graffiti are probably always going to be an anti- social issue to some extent yet with the GumBusters electric or petrol generator driven machines plus the up to date cordless technology, there is now the gum busting solution to suit every environment.
The GumBusters brand will continue to advocate the ‘see it clean, keep it clean’ motto and as the gum busting technology continues to develop, this becomes easier than ever to adhere thus minimising the impact this issue has on our world!
