CLEANING & HYGIENE

TRANSFORMATIVE BUSINESS

CEO of Cleanology Dominic Ponniah, explains how small steps can transform ESG into an imperative business practice.

Sustainability has been one of the core principles at Cleanology since our inception. We believe in treading softly and, as we expand, our vision and innovations grow with us.

We focus on recycling and markets for recycled materials; on chemicals and energy, and we monitor every aspect of our business. In recent years, however, we have found ourselves taking a wider, more holistic approach. Increasingly, sustainability is being replaced by environment, social, governance – ESG.

Environment The commitment of cleaners can make or break a workplace recycling scheme, but there is scope for much more. For example, one of our greatest impacts is travel. Cleanology’s zero-emission, all-hybrid and electric fleets save 5,000 litres of diesel per year – equivalent to 13.5 tonnes of CO2.

As well as reducing our carbon impact, this shows that going green is good for budgets. There is no road tax to pay, and also no London congestion charge; that’s a cost reduction of £8,500 a year per van.

It is easy to shout about headline-grabbing initiatives, but improvement in any area is all about monitoring and searching for the areas with the greatest impact.

Despite a huge shift towards chemical-free cleaning, over-use of solution is still a big problem. Our portion- controlled sachets of biological cleaning solution help Cleanology to save 16,092 litres of water each year, and cut plastic bottle use from 21,600 to just 600 PET bottles.

While recycling has a positive impact for those products that cannot be avoided, without markets, recycled material is useless. With this in mind, we have pioneered the use of uniforms made from recycled bottles and buy recycled
